Cyber security: how to prevent fraud?

Source: MeDirect

Scams and cybersecurity risks are on the rise. You must therefore always be alert and know how to recognize these risks. For that reason, it is important to stop and think before acting. Below are some tips on how to spot the different techniques cybercriminals use and how to avoid them:

Phishing

With phishing criminals pretend that their emails come from a legitimate source and urge the victim to act quickly without verifying the source. The victim then clicks on a malicious link (URL) or provides sensitive information, such as bank details or passwords.

We advise you to stop, look, and think! Verify the URLs by hovering over the links. If the URL doesn’t match the text of the link, or if it looks weird, it could be wrong. Don’t click on it unless you’re sure the link is safe.

Social Engineering

With social engineering, criminals manipulate the victim by pressuring him/her and take advantage of his/her natural reactions. They do not give the victim time to think.

If you are not sure whether the message comes from the person you know, contact the person or the bank via a secure method, for example by telephone. Do not pay attention to individuals posing as an employee of the bank. A bank – including MeDirect – never asks for your PIN, password, or any other code.

Guessing passwords

Criminals take advantage of short or easy-to-guess passwords, such as passwords that contain names, places, or a date.

Use multiple and hard-to-guess passwords. Use a password manager to create strong passwords. Don’t share passwords and use different passwords for different accounts.

Wi-Fi security

Occasionally, cybercriminals take advantage of public Wi-Fi by placing them between you and the connection point to intercept your information.

Don’t use insecure or public Wi-Fi networks to make online payments. Use cellular data or a secure Wi-Fi connection such as your home connection.
